The story of the world’s first liquid-fuelled rocket.
Club Shack Sun 15 Mar 14:30 - 17:00
Join us for a special presentation from space expert, broadcaster and author Jerry Stone FBIS FRAS, to mark the 100th anniversary of the world’s first liquid-fuelled rocket in 1926: “Nell, Esther and Aunt Effie”
The afternoon will start with the question “Is Pluto A Planet?”:
In July 2015 the New Horizons spacecraft reached distant Pluto after a journey of 9½ years. But did it encounter a planet? In 2006 the International Astronomical Union voted to re-classify Pluto as a Dwarf Planet, starting a major controversy that still continues. But does it need to? “Is Pluto A Planet?” is a highly visual and entertaining presentation that looks in detail at the IAU’s definition of a planet, and some of its unexpected - and unintended - consequences.
Followed by “Nell, Esther and Aunt Effie” The story of the world’s first liquid-fuelled rocket. In 1926 Robert Goddard launched the world’s first liquid-fuelled rocket. Within the space of 100 years we went from the first liquid-fuelled rocket to having craft out in interstellar space! This is how the whole adventure started.
Jerry Stone will also have books and t-shirt for sale.
